14 Aug How strong is the bond between dogs and humans?
For many dog owners these recent findings won’t come as a surprise but it has been scientifically proven through behaviour and neuroimaging studies that dogs experience emotions in a way that is similar to humans and that they see us as their family.
In a recent study dogs were trained to enter a functional MRI machine scanner while awake and unrestrained in order to measure their neural responses to the smell of people and dogs, both familiar and unknown. Scientists found that dogs experience positive emotions (like love and attachment) in a similar ways humans do. They have a level of sentience comparable to that of a human child.
Recent behaviour studies also verified that dogs often rely on humans more than they do their own kind for affection and protection. When a dog is scared or worried it will run to its owner just like toddlers would run straight towards their parents.
These results explain why there is such a strong bond between dogs and their human caretakers!
